InfoAge and the Tesla Science Institute will present a special Sneak Peek of INVISIBLE THREADS- From Wireless to War on Saturday May 21, 2022 in the Marconi Ball Room at the InfoAge Science and History Museums complex. The documentary delves into the early development of wireless technology on the eve of WWI that connected inventors Nikola Tesla and Guglielmo Marconi to a shadowy radio station in West Sayville, NY called Telefunken. As they all competed for radio supremacy, Telefunken was using their plant to send nefarious communications to Germany. Among the suspected subterfuge was information that led to the sinking of the Lusitania. Ten years of research uncovers new links to Telefunken’s role as a communications hub for an international spy ring that was engaged in subversion and sabotage. Posing as a legitimate business, the station’s violations of neutrality went unnoticed by the US Navy.

The film is directed by NY filmmaker/researcher Joseph Sikorski, whose 2015 documentary TOWER TO THE PEOPLE- Tesla’s Dream at Wardenclyffe Continues was selected for the Core Collection of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences. Following the screenings, Sikorski will participate in a live Q&A session.

In addition to new research which connects many missing dots to the Telefunken story, the film’s utilization of technology provides restored historical imagery at a high resolution and clarity. Sophisticated 3D models allow for new perspectives from existing 2d photos, while A.I. enhancements create movement from static imagery.

The finished documentary, narrated by Tony Todd (Candy Man, The Rock), will be making its New Jersey debut- a location relevant to the film in more ways than one. In addition to Marconi’s work in the state, INVISIBLE THREADS features Westfield hero Charles Emory Apgar, who helped expose un-neutral messages emanating from Telefunken in 1915 using a homebuilt wireless system.

According to Tesla Science Institute President Samuel Mason, “The Sneak Preview of INVISIBLE THREADS – From Wireless to War is a perfect fit for InfoAge, being it is dedicated to the preservation of New Jersey’s rich communications, computer, and electronic technology and history.” Mason adds, “We’re looking forward to more innovative collaborations between New Jersey institutions, to help bring these important stories to the community.”
